Explorers are the SP group: sensing plus perceiving. The four codes are ISTP, ISFP, ESTP, and ESFP. Keirsey called them Artisans. Official MBTI treats each code separately. Take the 16 types test. Overview: 16 types explained.
What SP means
Sensing (S) starts from the concrete present. Perceiving (P) prefers the outer world left adaptable. Together that often looks like skill in the moment: tools, performance, negotiation, craft. Keirsey’s Artisan roles were Crafter (ISTP), Composer (ISFP), Promoter (ESTP), and Performer (ESFP).
In function language, ESTP and ESFP lead with extraverted sensing (Se): tracking what is happening now and acting on it. ISTP and ISFP support Se with introverted thinking or feeling. ESTP is often taught as Se–Ti; ESFP as Se–Fi; ISTP as Ti–Se; ISFP as Fi–Se. That is why two “sensors” can still disagree about whether the next move should be more efficient or more true to a value.
ISTP
Foundation sketch: tolerant, flexible, quiet observer who acts quickly to solve a problem. Analyzes how things work, cause and effect, efficiency. Usually taught as Ti lead, Se auxiliary. At work: troubleshooting, tools, incidents. In relationships: shared activity more than a long speech. Common miss: vanishing into the task when a feeling starts.
ISFP
Foundation sketch: quiet, friendly, sensitive, kind, present-oriented, loyal to values and people, dislikes disagreement, does not force opinions. Usually taught as Fi lead, Se auxiliary. At work: craft and care that can be made well. Common miss: a no that never becomes a sentence.
ESTP
Foundation sketch: flexible, pragmatic, immediate results, energetic problem-solving, here-and-now, spontaneous, learns by doing. Usually taught as Se lead, Ti auxiliary. At work: field roles, closing, crisis. Common miss: consequences that were not written down before the swing.
ESFP
Foundation sketch: outgoing, friendly, accepting, exuberant, works with others to make things happen, common sense, makes work more fun, learns by trying with people. Usually taught as Se lead, Fi auxiliary. At work: live rooms, hospitality, service. Common miss: putting off the conversation that would make next month easier.
Research standing
There is no good evidence that SP types cannot plan, or that they are “not leadership material.” Those are internet cartoons. What the sketches do support is a preference for concrete, adaptable work. MBTI reliability limits still apply.
